Sanderson Farms has steadily scratched its way up the pecking order of poultry processors. The company sells fresh and frozen chicken in whole, cut-up, and boneless forms under the Sanderson Farms label. Its customers are retailers, distributors, and fast-food restaurants, located mainly in the southern, midwestern, and western US. In addition to buying chicks from breeders, the company maintains its own breeder flocks and contracts with about 40 independent chicken farmers, who raise the chicks for Sanderson. Its prepared foods division sells value-added processed and prepared food items, including frozen entrées.
