Katy Industries, Inc.
Katy Industries helps janitors clean up their act. About 55% of its sales come from its maintenance products (cleaning supplies, abrasives, stains). Katy also makes electric-corded products (extension cords, surge protectors, garden lighting), through its Woods Industries business. Its brands include Brillo, Kleenfast, and Yellow Jacket. The firm has sold most of its electric component subsidiaries (which made tools, metal strip, and foil, among others) to focus on its core maintenance businesses. It also has a 43% interest in a shrimp harvesting and farming operation in Nicaragua. Since its 1967 founding, Katy Industries has sold everything from shrimp to shoes. The Carroll family owns about 40% of the firm.

Smithfield Foods, Inc.
When Smithfield Foods waddles up to the trough, all the other porkers stand back. Fat from acquisitions, the company is the world's largest hog producer and pork processor. Its products include fresh pork and processed meats sold under the Fleetwood, John Morrell, Lykes, Patrick Cudahy, and Smithfield Premium names. It distributes across the US and to about 40 other countries, and it has made major moves into France and Poland. In a steady effort to diversify, the company has built up its beef and prepared-foods operations through acquisitions. In 2007 Smithfield's board voted to merge with Premium Standard Farms. Premium's board agreed as well.

Ukrop's Super Markets, Inc.
Central Virginia shoppers head to Ukrop's Super Markets for baked goods, prescriptions, to-go meals, and even banking services -- but they don't go for beer or wine, and they don't go on Sundays. Ukrop's is Richmond's #1 supermarket chain, operating nearly 30 Ukrop's Super Markets, Joe's Market, a central bakery and kitchen, and a distribution center. Most Ukrop's Super Markets have in-store pharmacies. Joe's Market, which debuted in 2001, is a newer store format featuring gourmet and specialty foods. Joe and Jacquelin Ukrop started the family-owned chain in 1937; their sons run it, adhering to Mom's wishes by not stocking alcohol and closing up shop on Sundays.
