No jokes about "herd mentality," please. Foremost Farms USA (owned by some 3,500 dairy farmers in seven Midwestern states, mainly in Wisconsin) is a major dairy cooperative. From 20 plants, the co-op churns nearly 5 billion pounds of milk into solid and fluid dairy products for industrial, retail, and foodservice customers per year. Its biggest sector is cheese, with a 2005 production of 481 million pounds. Foremost's retail brands include Golden Guernsey Dairy and Morning Glory. The co-op also produces private-label products for retailers. To reduce dependence on commodity products, the Foremost also manufactures value-added items and ingredients such as flavored milk drinks and pharmaceutical-grade lactose.
